about

In 1972 we recorded "The Hammered Dulcimer" hoping that perhaps we'd make our money back someday. The selection of the "Gaspe Reel" as the theme music for the PBS series "Crockett's Victory Garden" and a "Recording of Special Merit" review in Stereo Review magazine helped make this one of the most popular hammered dulcimer recordings ever.

We unearthed the original tapes back in 1990 in order to bring you this compilation of our first two records. 100,000 copies later, with a new generation of hammered dulcimer and country dance fans on the scene, we're still playing and having as much fun as ever.

Note: Tracks 14-19 are from our second LP "Saturday Night in the Provinces" FHR-05

Except as noted, all music herewith is in the public domain. This material was originally released on FHR-01 (1973) and FHR-05 (1975) by Front Hall Records. www.andysfronthall.com

Bill Spence (1940-2019) began playing the hammered dulcimer in 1969, after meeting Howie Mitchell at the Fox Hollow Festival in Petersburg, NY. In 1970 he formed Fennig’s All-Star String Band with musicians living in the Albany area. Their debut album "The Hammered Dulcimer" was released in 1973 and became the source of inspiration for a generation of new-found hammered dulcimer enthusiasts. ... more
